Unit 1 of QCE Mathematical Methods establishes the algebraic, statistical, and function foundations that underpin the entire Methods course. The Algebra topic develops fluency with the algebra of polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic expressions, solving equations and inequalities, and working with the formal definition of functions including domain, range, composite functions, and inverse functions. The Statistics topic introduces the language of probability and statistical inference — including sample spaces, events, conditional probability, independence, discrete random variables, probability distribution tables, and the expected value and variance of a discrete random variable. The Functions topic develops a rigorous study of several key function families including polynomial functions, their graphs, transformations, and key features. A strong grounding in all three topic areas of Unit 1 is essential preparation for the calculus content introduced in Unit 2, and for the increasingly sophisticated function and statistics work of Units 3 and 4.

The Calculus topic covers the concept of a limit and the derivative as the gradient of the tangent to a curve, differentiation of polynomial functions using the power rule, the product rule, the quotient rule, and the chain rule, finding equations of tangents and normals, identifying and classifying stationary points, and applying differentiation to optimisation and rates of change problems in practical and contextualised settings. The Further Functions topic extends the function families studied in Unit 1 to include exponential functions and the natural number e, logarithmic functions including the natural logarithm, and circular functions including sine, cosine, and tangent — developing students’ ability to sketch, transform, and work with all function types that appear across the Mathematical Methods course. Unit 2 builds the calculus and function fluency that is directly assessed and extended in Units 3 and 4.
Explore Unit 2 → Enrol in Unit 2 →Unit 3 of QCE Mathematical Methods extends both the function and statistics content to the senior course level assessed in the external examinations. The Further Functions topic develops differentiation and antidifferentiation of exponential functions including eₓ, natural logarithmic functions, and circular functions including sin x, cos x, and their composites via the chain rule, and applies these to rates of change, optimisation, and graphical analysis problems. The Statistics topic introduces the continuous probability distributions that are essential for the senior course — including the concept of a continuous random variable, probability density functions, and the normal distribution as the key continuous model, including standardisation using z-scores and the use of technology to calculate probabilities. Students also begin their study of statistical inference through the concept of a sample proportion as a random variable, its approximate sampling distribution, and the construction and interpretation of confidence intervals for a population proportion. Unit 3 directly prepares students for the external examination content and the further calculus of Unit 4.
Explore Unit 3 → Enrol in Unit 3 →Unit 4 of QCE Mathematical Methods completes the calculus strand of the course and is the most extensively assessed area in the external examinations. The Further Calculus topic covers antidifferentiation and definite integration of polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, integration using substitution for selected composite functions, the fundamental theorem of calculus, the calculation of exact areas under and between curves using definite integrals, and the application of integration to practical contexts including the average value of a function, total accumulated change, and areas in applied settings. Students are also expected to apply all differentiation and integration techniques from Units 2 and 3 to unfamiliar, multi-step problems in both technology-free and technology-active examination settings. Unit 4 is the capstone of the QCE Mathematical Methods course, and a fluent command of all calculus skills developed across Units 2, 3, and 4 is essential for strong performance in the two external examinations.
