NCEA Mathematics Level 1 is the Year 11 NCEA Mathematics course and covers three courses — Algebra and Measurement, Geometry and Trigonometry, and Statistics and Probability — each aligned to the New Zealand NZQA Level 1 achievement standards. Algebra and Measurement covers algebraic procedures, relationships between tables, equations and graphs, measurement, and right-angled triangle problems. Geometry and Trigonometry covers geometric reasoning and geometric representations. Statistics and Probability covers multivariate and bivariate data investigations and situations involving chance. Students are assessed at Achievement, Merit, and Excellence across both internal and external standards, with higher grades requiring relational thinking and extended abstract reasoning. NCEA Level 1 Mathematics provides the essential foundation for Level 2 Mathematics and for all subsequent NCEA mathematics study.

Algebra and Calculus develops algebraic manipulation, graphical analysis, and introduces the core concepts of differential calculus including differentiation of polynomial and other standard functions, finding gradients and rates of change, optimisation, and antidifferentiation. Geometry and Trigonometry covers the geometry of right and non-right-angled triangles including the sine rule, cosine rule, and area formula, as well as coordinate geometry and transformation geometry. Statistics and Probability develops the full statistical enquiry cycle, time series analysis, probability distributions, and confidence intervals for proportions. Level 2 is assessed at Achievement, Merit, and Excellence across both internal and external standards, and is the essential prerequisite for NCEA Level 3 Mathematics and Calculus.

The Level 3 course develops advanced algebraic and function skills, systems of equations, trigonometric identities and equations, conic sections, complex numbers, mathematical induction, sequences and series, and the full suite of differential and integral calculus techniques including differentiation and integration of exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and the application of calculus to kinematics, rates of change, and optimisation. The Statistics and Probability strand develops formal statistical inference, probability distributions, and the application of statistical reasoning to real-world data. NCEA Level 3 Mathematics is assessed at Achievement, Merit, and Excellence, and is the highest secondary mathematics qualification in New Zealand, providing essential preparation for university study in mathematics, statistics, science, engineering, and quantitative disciplines.
