This topic introduces students to discrete mathematics by applying matrices and graph theory to solving problems in familiar contexts.

Costing and stock management allows the idea of matrices and their arithmetic to be learnt in a context that can be logically developed. Electronic technology is used for efficiency in calculations involving matrix multiplication.

In graph theory, students encounter various optimisation problems that can be represented in a network. Algorithms are developed that enable them to find the number of paths, shortest or longest path, and minimum connection or maximum flow in a network.

In both areas of this topic, students examine problems set in various contexts and discuss the appropriateness of the models and the usefulness of the solutions found.
