STRUCTURE OF STORIES

How to Construct a Story
Most story structures are impossible to follow as they impose what you story should do rather than what it needs.
Let’s look at what is needed.
 balance
 conflict
 pace
 growth
 a connection with readers

Balance
Though it may bore some people, stories need high and low points. They complement each other.
It must balance:
 mood (esp. dark)
 characters
 ‘shock’ and ‘humour’
 dialogue
 description

Conflict
A story needs conflict.
Conflict can come in a variety of forms.
 Physical
 Emotional
 Social
 Spiritual
 Political etc.
Conflict being overcome is what engages an audience.

Pace
Think of this like running cross country.
You need to pace your story so the big moment has impact, and your story moves steadily rather than ‘jumps’.
This is how you get ‘flow’. If it runs out of steam too quick, or ends ‘suddenly’ it greatly loses effect.

Growth
Your story must ‘grow’, that is, be told in a way where people can see progress in a character or story-line.
This helps establish theme and characters.
It makes it more meaningful.
More likely to establish a connection with readers.

Connection with Readers
A story must reach out to readers in some way, and this is something you need to put in your story.
This can be:
 honesty
 emotional or sensory
 nostalgic
 a moral question
 ‘real’ or ‘personal’ issue.
 not cliché

So How Do I Structure My Story?
There is no set way.
You need to write your story around the things it needs.
The simplest way is:
 Characters: for every strength have a weakness
 Break up the main points
 Establish conflict
 Say what needs to be said
 Build towards a climax

Climax
A story should lead to some sort of crucial point or climax.
This is a point that gives your story direction and purpose.
Even though your stories won’t be judged based on entertainment, they will be judged on having a direction and message.
