Additional information

Creating ‘Flow’
When creating ‘flow’ in your story, what you are effectively doing is making your story simpler to read.
It also means employing a structure which is logical, seamless.
In other words, it helps your story to make sense.
It also gets to a point.

Tip One: Have Direction
Writing a ‘make-it-up-as-I-goalong’ kind of story won’t give you any kind of cohesion.
You need to have a point to be working towards – even if that point is just an ending or climax of your story.
If you are given a question or topic, your end point needs to provide some sort of insight for that topic.

Tip Two: Simplify
Good stories are simple in their approach. With the length of the stories you write, you don’t have the time or space to develop complicated storylines.
Think of this way, a good story for these purposes is one you can describe to someone in a sentence.

Tip Three: Using Description
You should be trying to flesh out your description, but doing it too much can also lead to issues.
You need to focus on setting boundaries and making your description significant:
 Write the important details; leave out description for the sake of description.

Tip Four: Sentencing
Sentencing is really important for flow, as bad sentencing can serious disrupt it.
Too many sentences that are too long or too short will severely impact the effect of your story.
You get this right through editing: read it aloud.

Tip Five: Sequencing
Your story should move from one paragraph to the next seamlessly.
To do this, each should be linked in some way, making an understandable leap from one to the next.
Avoid paragraphs that are unrelated to the one previous, try to link them in some way.

Tip Six: Avoid Epic
An epic story jumps too quickly and you don’t have time to develop them properly.
As much as it may appealing to write a grand epic that you see in movies and books, you won’t have time to develop it in a way that really does the story justice.

Flow: The Mindset
To make your story flow, what you are really doing is adding layers to a basic framework.
Have a simple premise and work towards a conclusion.
Strengthen it with strong ideas, perspectives and characters.
Focus on showing what needs to be shown.
