Chemistry of the Earth Zones

Chemistry of the Earth Zones of the Earth The matter in the Earth can be split into 4 sub-groups.
– Lithosphere
– Biosphere
– Hydrosphere
– Atmosphere

Lithosphere
Essentially contains the mineral components of the Earth.
The lithosphere is composed of the Earth’s crust and upper mantle.
The lithosphere is any section of the Earth that deforms over an extremely long period of time (i.e. rocky substances)
Mostly composed of metal silicates as well as Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaCO3 and NaCl.
They exist as underground deposits, rocks and soils.

Hydrosphere
Composed of non-living bodies of liquid water (lakes, rivers, oceans, etc.). Composition varies depending on location.
Freshwater is an extremely limited resource on this planet.

Hydrosphere
Most of the Hydrosphere is salt water:
– Salt water: 97.4%
– Rivers, lakes, reservoirs, soil, living organisms: 0.02%
– Some as permafrost: 1.98%
– Rest stored underground: 0.60%

Atmosphere
Gaseous component of the Earth.
The atmosphere helps to store and transport oxygen, nitrogen, water vapour and carbon dioxide, which are all involved in special cycles.

Biosphere
The only sphere that considers living organisms.
Extends from 8-10 km above sea level to a few metres down into the soil.
Life in water occurs at various depths to about 3000 m.
In the biosphere there is an interaction between life and the material of the other three, nonliving, zones — the lithosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere.
