Balancing Chemical Equations

Forms of Chemical Equations
In general chemical equations are of the form:
A + B -> C + D, wWhere A and B are reactants and C and D are products.
In order to obey the law of conservation of mass we need to balance equations.

Balancing Chemical Equation
Balancing equations quickly comes with practice.
There is no “right” way to do this but there are less efficient ways.

Step 1: Take either elemental metal or the most complex molecule and set its coefficient to 1.
In reality you can set any of the coefficients to 1 but the most complex molecule is usually the best choice for future steps.
Step 2: Figure out which elements appear in only one molecule on the product side and only one molecule on the reactant side.
These elements need to be balanced first. Looking at the equation you can see carbon appears once on the reactant side in ethane and once on the product side in carbon dioxide.
Hydrogen is the same; it appears in the ethane molecule and in the water molecule.
Oxygen cannot be balanced first as it appears in 2 molecules on the product side. It would be too difficult to start with oxygen.
Step 3: There should be equal numbers of elements on reactant and product sides. Create equations that represent this and solve them.
Step 4: Replace pronumerals with the numbers that you have calculated to have the final equation.
Fractional coefficients are fine as these equations don’t represent single molecules but rather the ratio of moles needed in this reaction.
If you are uncomfortable with fractional coefficients simply multiply everything by the denominator of the fraction.
