Atomic Structure

General Structure of Atom
The general structure of the atom is similar to the structure of the solar system.
At the centre is the nucleus.
Within the nucleus positively charged particles (protons) and neutral particles (neutrons) can be found.

General Structure of Atom
Orbiting the nucleus are smaller negatively charged particles (electrons).
There are always equal numbers of electrons and protons in any atom.

Defining an Atom
Atoms can be differentiated using two numbers, the mass number and the atomic number.
The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom.
All atoms of the same element will have the same atomic number.

Defining an Atom
The mass number is the number of protons + number of neutrons.
The mass number separates different isotopes of the same element.

The nucleus defines what an atom is, the electron configuration defines the chemical properties of the atom.
The electrons orbit around the nucleus in specified distances/orbits known as shells.

The further the electron is away from the nucleus the greater the energy that electron is said to possess.
Therefore shells are said to be the “energy levels” of electrons.

The goal of atoms is to achieve stability.
This stability occurs when the “octet rule” is satisfied.
This rule essentially means that a full outermost electron shell is required for stability.
Shells must be full before electrons can start filling higher shells.

Electron Configuration
In the first shell two electrons are required to fill it.
Therefore an atom that only has 1 shell needs 2 electrons to achieve stability.
Helium has 2 electrons and so it is stable.

Electron Configuration
However hydrogen has only 1 electron so it is not as stable as helium.
All shells after the first require 8 electrons.
